Flexible scenter and room freshener

In case you didn’t know, bicarbonate of soda is the most amazing household item you could have around your house.

You can use it to:

  • clean baking dishes with baked on food, just with a scourer and a paste of baking soda and water
  • clean your bathroom, in place of ajax or other powder cleansers
  • absorb odours on your carpet or in your shoes, by sprinkling it on the offending item and leaving before vacuuming/wiping off

You can also add 1/2 cup to your wash to freshen your clothes or 1/2 cup to your bath to soften your skin. But that’s not all – amazant!

I respect the flexibility of this amazing substance, so my homemade sunday project this weekend was to infuse a box of it with some lovely scented herbs/fruits from around my house.

I’ll be able to sprinkle this lovely scented substance on my mattress when I am airing it, use it as a bath salt, sprinkle it on my amazing shag rug to freshen it and use it in the wash if I am so inclined. I can even pop some of it it into a nice jar and give some of it as part of a house warming hamper.

Ingredients

  • Box of Bicarbonate of soda
  • Glass Jar with lid
  • Sprigs of rosemary (from my garden) washed and finely chopped
  • Zest of lemon (from my tree)

Combine all the ingredients (barring the jar and lid, of course).  Mix really well – the mixture will clump together. Spread this mix on a baking tray and pan and pop into a 160°C oven for 20/so minutes or until the mix had dried out. You’ll need to agitate it and mash it up with a spoon to make sure it is drying evenly.

When the mix is dry, chuck it in a mortar and pestle and bash away at it to make sure it is combined further and that all the lumps are broken down.

Pour this into your jar, seal with lid – et voila!

Not bad for less that 60 minutes real work

You could also use combinations/permutations of the following in your version:

  • Mint
  • Lavender
  • Eucalyptus oil
  • Lemon verbena
  • Orange Zest
  • Cloves
  • Rose petals
  • Lemongrass
  • Essential oils
